Icicle Creek Municipal Intake

Background:

Icicle Creek is a tributary of Wenatchee River which flows into the Columbia River. A number of restoration projects were undertaken in Icicle Creek to improve Steelhead Trout and Bull Trout fish passage to upper Icicle Creek. Along with these restoration efforts, an ISI cone screen was installed at the City of Leavenworth municipal water intake. The screen system is located approximately five miles southwest of the City of Leavenworth on the north bank of Icicle Creek.

ISI designed and fabricated a C66-18HA cone screen for this intake. The screen measures 66 inches (1.7 m) in diameter and 18 inches (0.46 m) in height. It is a self-cleaning wedge wire cone screen rotated by a drive unit powered by a hydraulic motor. The screen provides fish protection with a maximum flow capacity of approximately 10.2 cfs (6.6 MGD, 1,040 m3/h) at 0.4 fps (12.2 cm/s) approach velocity with approximately 25.5 square feet (2.4 m2) of screen area when fully submerged. The screen is fabricated from type 304 stainless steel with a 1.75 mm slot opening and 50 percent open area. The screen is housed in a vault which includes a sediment sluicing system.

Benefit of ISI System

ISI's conical shaped screen enables this water diversion to meet fish protection criteria by placing a large screen surface area in a relatively small project footprint. The brush-cleaning system maintains a clean screen surface and therefore maintains the regulatory required approach velocity during water diversion.
